Thirteen-year-old Nathaniel Samsel is the 2011 Southern Regional Mountain Dulcimer Champion and 2010 mid-east regional champion. He also placed 3rd in the 2011 national championship and won the 2011 Colorado championship. Nathaniel first began playing the mountain dulcimer after he and his dad built an instrument together at a workshop in 2007. Soon after they joined the Nacoochee Strummers, where "Miss Lynn" began teaching them about dulcimer playing. Nathaniel, who was 8 at the time, quickly proved that he's a faster learner than dad. He has benefitted greatly from fine teaching at dulcimer festivals by top instructors, especially 2006 national champion Jeff Hames. Nathaniel performs regularly in solo concerts, festival appearances and performances for churches or civic groups and teaches workshops at festivals and club meetings. Nathaniel's main performance dulcimer is a custom spruce-cherry McSpadden Dulcimer. He also likes to perform with his Clemmer Ban-Jammer. Nathaniel has two brothers and two sisters and is home-schooled.
